The easy part of a solar-module warranty is the number on the front page: 12, 15, 25 or 30 years. The hard part is the sentence that decides what happens after a panel is alleged to fail.
Consider the published LONGi utility-module limited warranty for listed Hi-MO 5 and Hi-MO 7 models. It offers a 12-year product warranty and a 30-year performance warranty. But it also defines when the clock begins, how quickly a customer must notify LONGi, what evidence the customer must submit, when a return needs authorization, who can choose the remedy, and which field costs remain with the customer. The filename and scope are part of the control: the contract should preserve the exact warranty revision, not a later page found in a web search.
That is the useful lesson for an importer, developer or EPC: a warranty is not a marketing duration. It is an operating system for product identity, proof, timing, testing and cost allocation. The following analysis uses LONGi's public document as a worked example, not as a claim that every manufacturer uses the same terms or that a particular claim would be covered.
The Reader Judgment
Before you release final payment, you should be able to answer six questions for the exact module and warranty revision in your contract:
- When does the warranty start, and who has the right to claim?
- What is the difference between a workmanship claim and a performance claim?
- Which serial, purchase, commissioning and measurement records must survive for the life of the project?
- How quickly must a claim be notified, and who can authorize a return or test?
- Which remedy can the supplier choose, and can it provide a similar rather than identical panel?
- Who pays for removal, repacking, shipping, customs, reinstallation and a disputed test?
If the answer to any of those questions is "the sales team will handle it," the buyer does not yet have a usable warranty file.
Why LONGi's Published Terms Are a Better Starting Point Than a Warranty Brochure
LONGi's document is specific enough to expose the difference between a promise and a claim path. It identifies a set of module series, distinguishes a 12-year limited product warranty from a 30-year limited performance warranty, and defines a warranty start date as delivery to the customer or six months after modules leave the production plant, whichever comes first. That earlier-of rule matters: a project delayed in a warehouse or at a port may use warranty time before commissioning.
The document also treats product and performance claims differently. For its listed Hi-MO 5 and Hi-MO 7 series, it specifies separate performance curves and says actual output is measured under standard test conditions in an independent laboratory accepted or previously designated by the supplier, with measurement tolerance considered under IEC 60904. A field dashboard showing disappointing output is important operational evidence, but it is not automatically the warranty measurement the manufacturer has agreed to use. Keep the accepted test path in the claim file before sampling or removal begins; a test result with an unclear chain of custody may be costly but inconclusive.
This is not an argument against LONGi. It is exactly why buyers should read a named warranty. A credible manufacturer has to define how a 30-year promise can be tested. The buyer's job is to understand whether the project can preserve and fund the evidence path that definition requires.

1. Start With Identity: Model, Revision, Serial, Buyer and Site
The LONGi warranty does not apply to an abstract "solar panel." It lists module series and model patterns. That is the first control a purchase order needs: capture the exact marketed model, power class, configuration and applicable warranty version before production. A later data sheet or a generic regional warranty page may not govern the purchased module.
The warranty's claims procedure asks for the claimant, a detailed description, supporting photos or data, the affected module's serial number, evidence of purchase, model and project location. Those fields should not be assembled for the first time after a failure. They should be created as a controlled project record:

2. The Thirty-Day Notice Rule Is a Project-Control Requirement
In the LONGi document, the customer should notify the sales team or global technical service department in writing within 30 days after identifying a claim. The notice calls for the claimant, description, photos or data, serial number, purchase evidence, model and project location, plus any supplementary information the supplier requests. The document says a failure to notify and provide the required information can allow LONGi to refuse to process the demand until the information is supplied.
For a buyer, that is not just a legal footnote. It means the asset owner, EPC, O&M contractor, warehouse and procurement team need a single escalation route. A good operating rule is: the person who first sees a possible defect preserves the panel identity and evidence; the person who owns the supplier relationship sends the formal notice; the contract owner tracks the deadline and requested information.
Do not write an overbroad notification email such as "our modules are failing." Start with the facts the warranty itself makes material. A concise notice record should identify the affected serials, model, site, discovery date, observed condition, safety action, supporting images/data, purchase reference and the immediate request: remote review, site inspection, test protocol or RMA direction. Save the sent notice, delivery/read evidence, supplier response and deadline calculation in one claim log; a customer-service ticket alone is not a complete notice record.
This does not decide causation. It prevents a potentially valid claim from becoming harder to investigate because nobody captured the condition, serial or date when it mattered.
3. A Return Is Not a Buyer-Controlled Test Shipment
The LONGi document says the supplier can require a module to be sent to its factory or a third party for testing and, in that case, will provide a Return Merchandise Authorization. It says an unapproved return will not be accepted and places the risk and expense of an unauthorized return on the customer.
This is a common commercial trap. A project team sees a suspected defect, removes a panel, ships it overseas and expects the shipping receipt to prove diligence. But a warranty may require the supplier to direct the examination first. Once the panel is removed, packed, shipped or altered without documented authorization, the parties may also lose evidence about its as-installed condition.
The purchase contract should therefore answer these practical questions before a claim exists:
- Who may isolate or remove a module for safety or diagnostic reasons?
- What photos, electrical readings, chain-of-custody notes and packaging evidence are needed before removal?
- Who issues an RMA, and what response deadline applies?
- Can the supplier inspect remotely or on site before return?
- Which laboratory is acceptable for a performance dispute, and how is its scope agreed?
- Who advances freight, insurance, customs and test costs while causation remains disputed?
The published warranty says LONGi may select an authoritative testing facility if the parties cannot reach consensus, and that the losing party ultimately bears the relevant test, freight and insurance costs. That is a reason to agree an escalation protocol and budget, not a reason to assume testing will be free.
At minimum, the claim log should freeze four timestamps: discovery, safety isolation, written notice and any approved removal. It should also identify the person with authority to accept a supplier remedy. Those small controls prevent a site team from making an irreversible evidence or cost decision while procurement assumes the claim is still only exploratory.
4. A Performance Warranty Is a Measurement Contract
The most expensive misunderstanding is to treat lower-than-expected site output as synonymous with a module-performance warranty claim. Project output can be affected by irradiance, soiling, shading, temperature, curtailment, inverter behavior, cabling, degradation assumptions, installation, damage and system design. A module warranty is usually narrower.
In LONGi's published terms, the guaranteed output is framed under standard test conditions and subject to an independent laboratory accepted or designated by the supplier. The buyer should therefore preserve two separate evidence streams:
- Project evidence: commissioning report, irradiance and weather context, inverter/monitoring data, site inspection, layout, cleaning and O&M history. This helps determine whether there is a problem worth escalating.
- Warranty evidence: exact model and serials, the applicable performance schedule, controlled measurement or test plan, laboratory acceptance, and chain of custody for any sample.
The U.S. Department of Energy's construction and performance guidance reaches the same practical conclusion from the owner side: commissioning should create accurate as-built documentation, verify equipment against specification, and prepare reports; warranty management requires documented underperformance and planning for removal, shipping and reinstallation. It also warns buyers to seek repair-and-replace language rather than merely supplemental relief.
For a performance claim, ask one question before spending money on a laboratory test: if the test confirms the alleged output gap, does the supplier's available remedy justify the testing and field work? The answer depends on the warranty revision, contract and project economics.
5. Remedy Language Matters More Than the Banner Claim
Under the LONGi document, if it confirms a covered defect, the supplier may, at its sole discretion, repair the modules, replace the modules or provide additional modules to make up for an output gap, or refund a residual value/value equivalent. The document also permits a similar module when the original is unavailable, provided its nominal power is at least equal to the concerned module.
Each option has a different project consequence:

These are not obscure edge cases. They are the commercial center of the deal. A low-price module plus a broad-sounding warranty can still leave a project owner paying the largest field costs. If those costs would be material, negotiate an explicit remedy schedule: pre-approved equivalent model rules, freight/customs allocation, labor cap or rate, response milestones, spare stock, and a method for approving substitutions.
6. Installation, Transfer and Payment Can Decide Coverage
The LONGi terms exclude specified situations including noncompliance with installation/manual requirements, misuse or accident, certain environmental events, excessive system voltage, and missing or unrecognizable serial labels. They also say failure to pay the purchase price to the supplier or its selling affiliate can affect coverage. The document permits a transfer to a subsequent project owner only under stated conditions, including an initial installation site and fully paid purchase price, with documentation requirements.
The buyer implication is straightforward: warranty readiness belongs in project acceptance, not only in procurement. The handover pack should include approved manuals, torque/installation records where relevant, serial and location map, commissioning tests, as-built documentation, O&M responsibility, warranty registration evidence and any owner-transfer notice. The DOE guidance similarly identifies warranty registration, as-built review, spare parts and proper operation as acceptance/O&M controls.
Where a module passes through distributor, EPC, financier and asset-owner hands, map the legal claimant early. A customer-service email address does not answer whether a future owner has rights, whether a distributor can submit a claim, or whether the manufacturer must be notified of the transfer.
A Buyer Test Before Final Payment
Run one tabletop exercise against the actual documents. Pick a serial number that will be in the shipment and ask the team to retrieve, within one working day:
- the applicable warranty PDF and exact model scope;
- the sales contract, buyer entity and warranty start-date rule;
- the factory/lot, serial list and packing/shipping record;
- the destination project, installer and commissioning records;
- the formal notice address and claim owner;
- the approved RMA/testing pathway; and
- the project budget and contract allocation for removal, return, replacement and reinstallation.
If the file cannot answer those questions before final payment, the warranty is not ready. The fix may be modest: a final serial export, a signed warranty schedule, a named service contact or a replacement-cost clause. But it must be made before a defect creates time pressure. Repeat the exercise after commissioning and whenever ownership changes, because the buyer entity, records owner and applicable site evidence may no longer be the same.
What This Does and Does Not Prove
LONGi's published warranty is a useful primary document because it makes the claim machinery visible. It does not prove that another LONGi model, another regional document, another manufacturer or your supply contract has identical terms. Read the current model-specific warranty, confirm it is incorporated into the signed contract, and obtain legal or technical advice for a disputed claim.
The durable judgment is simpler: do not buy a warranty duration. Buy a claim path that your project can actually operate.
